Dr. Shounuck I. Patel, DO is double board-certified in Sports Medicine and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and fellowship-trained in interventional spine and pain management. He practices in Newport Beach, Burbank, and Pasadena, California.
He is a co-author of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) guidance statement on platelet-rich plasma for knee osteoarthritis, published in PM&R in 2026, and of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) 2025 evidence-based guidelines for regenerative therapies in the management of chronic low back pain, published in Pain Physician.
Dr. Patel founded The Patel Center for Functional Regeneration, a concierge practice treating orthopedic injuries and pain conditions without surgery. His approach combines image-guided orthobiologic injections, including platelet-rich plasma, bone marrow concentrate, and adipose tissue, with osteopathic manipulation, exercise prescription, and nutrition. All injections are performed under ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance.
He treats a range of spine conditions including cervical instability, disc and facet pain, and low back pain, with a clinical focus on hypermobility spectrum disorders, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and dysautonomia. He also treats athletes across youth, collegiate, professional, and masters levels, with an emphasis on returning to sport without surgery.
Dr. Patel earned his bachelor’s degree from George Washington University, a Master of Medical Science from Drexel University, and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.
He completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, affiliated with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, followed by an interventional spine and sports medicine fellowship at OSS Health, the Orthopedic and Spine Specialists hospital in York, Pennsylvania, then affiliated with Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. He completed advanced orthobiologics training with Regenexx and the Interventional Orthobiologics Foundation.
Dr. Patel is a Master Instructor for the Interventional Orthobiologics Foundation, where he serves on the Membership and Engagement Committee, previously chaired the Curriculum Committee, and has served as master of ceremonies for the national conference for several years. In 2026 he presented on the hypermobile spine at the national IOF/TOBI conference.
He teaches regenerative medicine and musculoskeletal ultrasound courses for TOBI, OrthoSono, and the Expert Education Institute, and was the 2024 keynote speaker for the New Zealand College of Musculoskeletal Medicine. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific and Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Patel is the co-author and illustrator, with John C. Cianca, MD, of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Cross-Sectional Anatomy (Demos Medical / Springer Publishing), winner of the 2019 PROSE Award in Clinical Medicine from the Association of American Publishers.
He has authored nine peer-reviewed publications indexed in PubMed along with multiple book chapters, and serves as a second-opinion consultant for 2nd.MD.

Dr. Shounuck Patel is the illustrator of the internationally published medical atlas, Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Cross-Sectional Anatomy, which won the Association of American Publishers PROSE Award for best book in Clinical Medicine.

Dr. Patel has published articles in various peer-reviewed medical journals including the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Pain Practice, American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, PMR Journal, and the Clinical Teacher Journal.
In addition to illustrating his medical atlas, he has co-authored and illustrated chapters in several books including the world-renown Atlas of Image-Guided Spinal Procedures, Atlas of Interventional Orthopedics Procedures, Atlas of Ultrasound-guided Musculoskeletal Injections, Interventional Spine Procedures, Advanced Techniques in Musculoskeletal Medicine and Physiotherapy, and Therapeutic Programs for Musculoskeletal Disorders.

When he is not treating patients or teaching physicians, Dr. Patel loves to spend time with his amazing wife, adorable Maltese poodle mix, and two rambunctious toddlers. Although he has already started exposing them to art, music and sports, once his kids are just a little older, Dr. Patel is really looking forward to introducing them to his interests that include drawing, photography, snowboarding, and breakdancing.
